Fertilization on a Lantzville-scale property is real work. A typical Nanaimo suburban lawn needs maybe 15-20 pounds of granular fertilizer per application; a Lantzville half-acre needs 40-50 pounds, applied evenly across the whole property. The math, the timing, and the equipment all need to scale up. We use commercial broadcast spreaders that handle the volume cleanly and uniformly.

Three seasons, three different products

Lantzville lawns benefit from a three-application annual program: spring starter, summer maintenance, fall winterizer. Each application uses a different formulation matched to what the lawn needs at that point in the season. Spring brings balanced nitrogen to wake the lawn up. Summer uses slow-release products to maintain without pushing heat-stressed growth. Fall delivers higher potassium for root development and winter hardiness.

For the seasonal calendar, see our fertilization timing guide.

Well water changes the watering plan

Many Lantzville properties are on well water rather than municipal supply, which affects how aggressively you can water after a fertilization application. Wells can run low in summer if usage is heavy, and a freshly fertilized lawn that doesn't get adequate watering can scorch from concentrated nutrients. We coordinate the timing of fertilizer application with the property's irrigation capacity — sometimes lighter applications more frequently, rather than heavy applications that need lots of water to integrate.

Granular only, no sprays

We apply granular fertilizer exclusively — no liquid sprays, no chemical applications. The reasons are practical for big Lantzville lots in particular: granular spreads evenly across acreage with commercial broadcast equipment, is activated by rainfall at the right time, doesn't drift onto livestock paddocks or neighbouring agricultural properties, and avoids the regulatory licensing required for chemical sprays. Granular is the right tool for this work.

Lime application, often needed

Lantzville's larger lawns, especially properties on heavier clay soils, often benefit from periodic lime application to correct acidic soil pH. The naturally acidic conditions of coastal BC, combined with conifer needle drop common on rural Lantzville properties, gradually push lawn soil into the acidic range where grass struggles and moss thrives. Granular lime corrects this over a season or two.

See our lawn lime application guide for the technique and the reasons.

What we apply

Coordinating with the rest of the program

Fertilization is most effective when it's coordinated with the rest of the lawn-care calendar — applied right after aeration, timed to match overseeding, scheduled around mowing so the products aren't picked up before they activate. We build the fertilization schedule around the rest of the seasonal maintenance plan rather than treating it as a stand-alone service.

What we don't do

No chemical sprays. No iron sulphate sprays, no herbicides, no moss kills. Granular work and physical lawn care are inside our scope. Chemical applications are the homeowner's responsibility or a licensed applicator's.
